99th Battalion Reunion, Bloomington, MN, 2005

The 99th were ski troops that were to be inserted behind German lines in Norway. All had to speak Norwegian fluently and they all went through intense training in mountain warfare. Most came from immigrant Norwegian families and grew up speaking the language around the house. Upon induction when asked if he spoke any foreign languages. One soldier replied no because he didn't consider Norwegian to be foreign.

The 99th Battalion spent a lot of the war attached to the 1st Army and fought their way across Europe. They were in the Battle of the Bulge in Malmedy, finally getting relieved by the 30th Division.
